Professor Tony Elger, Centre for Comparative Labour Studies, Department of Sociology, University of Warwick, Coventry, UK

Dear Sir,

As a sociologist with an interest in the distinctive national trajectories of different contemporary societies, including Russia, I was alarmed to read of the grievances of many sociology students studying at Moscow State University. As a social researcher with a commitment to the education and training of the next generation of students, both to utilise our discipline in the wider world and to support the next generation of innovative scholars, I was particularly disturbed by their account of the narrow curriculum and the lack of opportunities for students to study contemporary empirical research methods and findings. I urge you to try to widen and open your curriculum, and to facilitate discussion and dialogue with the students about their grievances, both for the good of the institution and current students and for the benefit of sociology as a vibrant discipline in Russia.

Yours sincerely,

Professor Tony Elger
